It seems like web sites are
getting so fancy-- do I need all this?
The best web sites are simple, eye-catching, easy to navigate and to the
point. The fact is that a clean, uncluttered site will better keep the
prospective customer focused on what you are trying to
present. A page with multitudes of columns and
boxes all over the place will confuse your prospect. The
subject of the page should stand out and catch the
reader.
Navigation throughout the site should be
easy to locate, and it shouldn't require more than three
mouse clicks to get to any page.
Much of the new technology for the
Internet, including that used in site design requires high-speed
Internet connections and fast computers. That's fine for
part of the public, but what about the part that are
still using dial-up modems, or God forbid, are still
using less than Pentium 4 processors in their computers.
These people will not wait 30 to 60 seconds for a page
to load! I won't and you probably won't either!
Another point that is over-looked is the
Search Engine compatibility. There is an ever growing
trend towards websites that are totally Flash. Flash is
a great design tool, however, it is not only labor
intensive, but it stops the search engines dead in their
tracks. Search engines cannot spider Flash movies. Since
they mainly look for keywords from the text in your
website, they will miss the subject of your site.
Designers can put META Tags and key words in till they
are blue in the face, but unless these words are found
in the viewable pages they will skip them. This is an
important part of design that isn't much talked about! I
use a little Flash, like the header and logo, or maybe
an inset somewhere in a page, but never Flash navigation
or complete Flash sites. Good old HTML still works best!
Browser incompatibility is another case
in point. We need to keep the site viewable in the older
versions of the major browsers. Again, lots of people
with older computers and operating systems cannot view
websites with some of the intense technologies.
You need to reach all of the people all of the time, not some of them
some of the time!
