Use Grok beside a spreadsheet in Excel or Google Sheets, then inspect the formula it adds. You will work through the same small example in either app, using the native Grok add-in or add-on for that platform.

Before you start
- Choose one desktop-browser workflow: Excel for the web with an editable workbook, or Google Sheets with a native editable spreadsheet.
- Permission to install the vendor’s Grok add-in or add-on. Work accounts may require administrator approval. The Excel Marketplace listing names SuperGrok, Heavy, Business, and Enterprise access with usage limits; confirm your account is eligible.
- A blank practice file with no customer data. Create headers Item, Quantity, Unit price, and Total in A1:D1; put Workshop seats, 10, and 20 in A2:C2.

Skills you’ll need: Connect the intended work account, check permissions, and verify retrieved information against the original document or message.

How this helps your brand
A real formula keeps a business calculation responsive when its inputs change. Inspecting cell references and testing several values helps protect pricing or planning work from a plausible but fixed answer.
Step 1: Choose the integration for your app
For Excel, use the Grok by SpaceXAI for Excel listing linked from x.ai/news/introducing-excel-addin. For Google Sheets, use the Grok listing by SpaceXAI linked from x.ai/news/introducing-google-workspace-addon.
These integrations work inside the office file. This exercise does not require Grok Bot’s separate desktop app or asking a Bot to control your browser.
Step 2: Install and open Grok beside the file
In Excel for the web, open Home, then Add-ins, and use More Add-ins to find the listing. Check its publisher and install it. Follow the add-in’s prompts to open its conversation pane and sign in.
In Google Sheets on a computer, use Extensions, Add-ons, Get add-ons. Find the official Grok listing, choose Install, and review the requested permissions. Open Grok from the file’s add-on interface or right sidebar and complete its sign-in prompts.
Tip: If installation is blocked by your organization, ask its administrator about this exact listing. Do not replace it with a similarly named third-party app.
Step 3: Confirm that Grok sees the practice range
Select A1:D2 and ask Grok to identify the headers and the values in row 2 without changing anything. It should report quantity 10 and unit price 20.
If it describes a different file or range, stop and identify the active sheet and range again. Keep the first request small enough that you can tell immediately whether the assistant is working in the intended file.

- Item · Quantity · Unit price · Total

- 10 seats × 20 each
- Expected destination
- D2 · Total
Ask for a readback of A1:D2 first. Match the headers and the 10 and 20 inputs before you allow an edit. Step 4: Ask for one ordinary formula
Use the prompt below to have Grok put the row total in D2 using a formula that multiplies B2 by C2. The result should be 200.
Select D2 and inspect the formula bar yourself. It should contain a calculation using the input cells, not just the fixed number 200. Ask Grok to explain which cells it used if the reference is unclear.
Illustrated exampleCheck the calculation behind 200D2fx=B2*C2shows 200B210Quantity×C220Unit price=D2200TotalThe formula bar proves D2 refers to both inputs; the displayed 200 alone does not.
Select D2 and look for a formula that refers to B2 and C2. A fixed number can look correct until an input changes. Step 5: Test that the formula follows the inputs
Change B2 from 10 to 5. D2 should become 100. Change C2 from 20 to 30. D2 should become 150. Restore 10 and 20 afterward.
If D2 stays at 200, ask Grok to replace the fixed value with a formula using B2 and C2, leaving the inputs alone. Repeat the two tests. Also check zero quantity, which should total zero. These checks catch an answer that looks right only for the initial example.

- 5 × 20Quantity changed100
- 5 × 30Price changed too150
- 0 × 30Zero quantity0
After checking, restore the original inputs: 10 and 20.
The result should follow every input change. Restore the starting values after all four checks. Step 6: Keep the checked result in the file
Review the practice row and confirm no unrelated cells were changed. Give the file a clear name and reopen it to check that the formula is still present.
Grok also has integrations for documents and presentations, but do not assume installing one Excel add-in installs every Microsoft 365 app. The Google Workspace add-on covers Sheets, Docs, and Slides. Repeat a similarly small, inspectable exercise before trusting it with a longer document or presentation.
You're done when
- The official Grok pane is open in the intended Excel workbook or native Google Sheet.
- D2 contains a formula referring to B2 and C2, with an initial result of 200.
- The changed inputs produce 100, then 150, and zero quantity produces zero.
- The original inputs are restored and the saved file reopens with the working formula.

Work only in [sheet name], range A1:D2, in this practice file. First confirm the headers and input values without editing. After I confirm the range, put a normal spreadsheet formula in D2 that multiplies Quantity in B2 by Unit price in C2. Do not overwrite the inputs, change other cells, or replace the calculation with a fixed value. Explain the formula and tell me how to verify these results: 10 multiplied by 20 is 200; 5 multiplied by 20 is 100; 5 multiplied by 30 is 150; zero quantity totals zero. If you cannot read or edit this range, say what is unavailable instead of claiming the work is done.
Paste into Grok’s pane inside Excel or Google Sheets after installing the official integration. Replace the sheet name. Confirm the reported range before authorizing the formula edit.
